Rules
Team size & divisions
- Min 6 players – max 10 players. Mixed division – 2 girls on court at any time
- Division 1 – advanced/intermediate level teams
- Division 2 – intermediate/novice level teams
- Premier Division – advanced level
Fixtures and schedule
All matches organized at one central location on a fixed weekday night (currently on Mondays). Fixtures are posted before the first date and do not change through the league. A team will have one match approximately every two weeks.
Each match is of three sets (i.e. 3:0 or 2:1). First 2 sets to 25 points and 3rd set to 15 points – NO 2 clear points. Match playing time is no longer than 50 minutes or 3 sets (whichever comes first) with 10 minutes warm-up. If 3 sets are not completed in 1 hour, the match stops and the final score of the last set played is recorded on the score sheet. A team with the highest score in this set wins. It is very important all matches start and finish on time.

A minimum basic clockwise rotation shall be followed by all teams.
FIVB rules apply to the matches.
League Points
Two points for each match won and one point to each team starting the match on time (max 3 points per match for the winning team and min 1 point per match for the losing team). There are also penalty points – one point is deducted for incomplete team (less than 5), one point is deducted for not having two female players on court in any mixed division, one point is deducted for not fulfilling the fixture.
How the League works
The current league has Premier Men Division and Mixed Divisions 1 & 2. Women Premier Division will be introduced at later stage.
Mixed Division 1 is for advanced/intermediate teams and Division 2 is for intermediate/novice teams. After each league through the season teams get promoted or relegated according to their results. Each team will play each other in their respective group and division to determine rankings. Then the bottom team in Division 1 will be relegated to Division 2 and the top team in Division 2 will be promoted to Division 1.
The FINALs will be held in each Division to determine the league champions at the end of the season.
Eligible players
Team Captains or Coordinators must register all players committed to the team by the first fixture. Players can join the league teams at any time during the season provided their registration details are added to the initial registration list for this team. Team Coordinators are responsible for keeping the list updated. Teams are not allowed to share players with the teams in the same Division to make up numbers on a match day.
In the League Finals only registered players for the team are allowed to represent this team. No new players will be allowed to play the League Finals.
Incomplete teams
The teams that have less than 6 players at the start of the match are considered incomplete. The teams can start playing with 5 players but the “phantom player” rule will apply – a team has to maintain rotational order and will lose a point when a missing player is due to serve. If the team finishes the match with 5 players, it should be recorded on the score sheet and the team does not get a bonus point for starting the match on time.
Teams cannot start playing if they have less than 5 players. If a team still has less than 5 players after 30 minutes past the official start of a match, this team defaults the match, a 0-3 result is recorded and one point is deducted for not fulfilling the fixture. The teams can use the allocated time for a friendly game.
Want to get involved but don't have a team?
Everyone can play the league. The Dubai Volleyball League promotes interest in the sport among people of different ages, gender and sporting abilities – from beginners to professionals. Individuals who are not attached to any club can join the existing teams. The league is open to juniors and seniors and has amazing friendly social atmosphere.
If you don’t have a team please email us with your enquiry stating you level (novice/intermediate/advance) and experience in volleyball (played casually/in school/in the club). Teams in the league are always in the lookout for new players.
